It was interesting to
read the above article in the March issue. The
concept may look attractive in principle, but
whether it is good or not can be decided only
after the schemes are framed by the banks and
details made public, including fine prints. Going
by the past record of schemes for senior citizens
e.g. Senior Citizens Savings Scheme, there is
every possibility that the Babus sitting in Finance
Ministry and Income Tax department will try to
make Senior Citizens life miserable. The way the
proposal has been interpreted by a large number
of Senior Citizens reminded me of the story of
an Elephant and Four Blind Men.

Editor: I
am not aware of any other action of the Govt vis-à-vis
senior citizens that has had a more substantive
impact on the quality of life of senior citizens.
In the US the scheme is a flourishing success.
Our country has also proved it can achieve what
it wants if we put the right application and effort.
It is necessary for senior citizens to support
the Govt. on dynamic initiatives rather be cynical
about its functioning.
