With over 200 million people over the age of 50, our country already faces unprecedented challenges.
The next few decades will see a huge demographic shift and the ageing population that constitutes 8% of the population currently will steadily climb to an astounding 20% by 2050. i.e., 1 of every 10 persons will be aged 60+. This demographic change brings in its trail problems which we cannot begin to conceive today.
Even today, adverse tax structures and policies, lack of affordable healthcare, breakdown of community living, lack of social support (pension and services), together with aggressive age discrimination creates havoc with the lives of seniors.
Emergence of nuclear families has exposed elders to emotional, physical and financial insecurity. Rising health costs have further strained intergenerational solidarity. Neglect, loneliness, elder abuse and mental health problems of elders are the key challenges of ageing besides financial and health security.
This has made many vulnerable, impacting their self esteem and simple dignity of living. This is even more compounded by government and individual apathy.
Not surprising.
After all, issues and problems related to ageing are a part of a dying cause.
To combat this challenge, Dignity Foundation brings to ALL citizens above the age of 50, over 10 community care services.
