The Goa Chapter was inaugurated by Advocate Ramkant Khalap, Chairman, Goa Law Commission and Ex Union Law Minister, on November 28, 2009, thanks to the efforts put in by Gervazio Perez, Senior Citizens Lions Club of Goa. A Press Conference was held the previous day at Panaji for reporters of local dailies and TV network, 'Prudent Media', for wide coverage. Sadanand Dessai, Jayant Volvoikar, Vithal Y Pawar, Bento Vaz, Capt Vinod Kapoor and Gervazio Perez formed the core group for Dignity Foundation's Goa Chapter.
The Porvorim Lions club office premises, their existing facilities and small staff at Kranti Nagar, Porvorim, were readily offered to help the Foundation recruit members and start its activities. The Helpline 0832-2411989 started functioning from 10 am to 6 pm, offering the following
- Rescue and protection from physical violence from within and outside the family.
- Emotional support through trained counsellors.
- Strategies for coping with difficult circumstances.
- Legal advice and police assistance.
- Help to obtain admission in Old Age Homes if warranted.
- Counselling to family members for better and more appropriate treatment to the elders.
Dignity Computers
A basic Computer Training Programme for Senior Citizens was provided at Kranti Nagar, Porvorim.
Dignity Medical Facilities
In association with the Lions Medical Centre, various medical facilities are provided to Senior Citizens and their family members. Dr A N Jadhav, Retired Professor & Head of the Dept of Surgery, Maharashtra Institute of Medical Science & Research, Talegaon Dist. Pune, attends to the patients.
Ophthalmology Department
In association with the Lions Medical Centre, eye check up (omputerised) is carried out by Dr Shamin Kurchodkar every Wednesday between 3.00 to 4.00 pm. Plastic and metallic frame with spectacles are provided at concessional rates.
Pathology Laboratory
In association with the Lions Medical Centre, blood testing is done from Monday to Saturday between 8.00 am to 12 noon.
Other Activities
The 'First Know Each Other' meeting was held on May 16, 2010, from 9.30 am to 4.30 p.m. at Goa Kshyatriya Maratha Samaj Hall, Porvorim, Goa. Around 75 people attended the function, with Hari Ramdas, Area Regional Manager, HDFC Bank, as Chief Guest. Dr A N Jadhav from the Medical Centre and Dr S M Palkar, a renowned Aryurvedic doctor, were present on the occasion. Ramdas spoke about banking for senior citizens, Dr Jadhav on common medical problems of senior citizens like diabetes, BP, Arthritis and heart problems, and how to avoid/minimise their bad effects, while Dr Palkar spoke on Ayurveda and Yoga in handling today's lifestyle problems. After lunch, there was a musical session, which included singing competition and telling of jokes.
The First Chai Masti Programme of Dignity's Goa Chapter was held on August 14, 2010, from 4-6 pm. Senior Citizen members along with invitees attended this action packed programme, with a short introductory speech by Roy Changoer, Chairman of Activities Committee, talk on Water Therapy by Sadanand Dessai, Quiz contest by John Eric Gomes, game organised by Vienna Shirodkar, Konkani folk song by Bento Vaz and jokes by Sunder Shanbag.
Current and Future Services
- A basic certified Computer Course (fundamentals, windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint & Internet), exclusively for the 50+. Also other courses made available like Tally, DTP, Hardware & Networking, typing, etc. This is in association with Lila Cyber Gurukool, Porvorim.
- In association with the Lions Club of Porvorim, Dignity Foundation provides medical check-up and medicines at concessional rates from 9 am to 1 pm. Eye check-up and spectacles are made available at reasonable price. Pathological Lab services for blood check-up, checking blood pressure, giving injections etc can be availed by Senior Citizens at nominal price.
- The Chai Masti programme will henceforth be on the second Saturday and fourth Saturday every month, where all the members will meet in the Dignity Foundation Hall and discuss issues of common interest, help in problem solving, participate in games etc. Experts in different fields will be invited to give talks relating to security and safety, Income Tax, finances and savings, medical, property, legal problems, etc.
- The Goa Chapter is planning to provide more services and diversify throughout Goa so that more senior citizens benefit from Dignity's services.
